A Brief Report on The Worksop Weekend
12th September 2025
In: News
About 30 of us attended the weekend at the Lion Hotel in Worksop.
Gareth and Caroline will give us a fuller report on the weekend.
The hotel was excellent, good rooms, good food and very friendly and attentive staff made the stay a pleasure. We thought parking would be tricky but it turned out OK. Tony & Sally's organisation made the weekend run successfully.
Worksop does not strike you as a destination for tourists but we found lots to do within easy reach. The town is suffering like most are today but has retained enough interest for the street photographer!
Within walking distance is the Worksop Priory of Our Lady & St Cuthbert. This was founded early in the 12th Century and then expanded up until the Reformation. The Victorians rebuilt parts damaged during the Reformation and there were further, very empathic additions in the 1970s.
Within easy driving distance is Mr Straw's House, a fascinating time capsule of an Edwardian house subsequently lived in by the two sons of the original Straw parents. They never altered the inside during the 20th Century. William, the elder son, lived until he was 92 and handed the house and its accompanying semi-detached to the National Trust in 1991.
Slightly further afield are Creswell Crags, Welbeck Abbey, Papplewick Pumping Station, Crich Tramway Museum and other places of real interest.

Coming back to our time at the hotel; we had an excellent speaker on Friday, Jonathan Ratnage who told us about the Peak District and showed some of his first class photographs.
On Saturday night Brian and Shirley Davis judged a number of competitions that Hugh Elliott managed extremely well. Brian gave constructive comments on all the photographs entered.
We include some of the winning photographs and the winning places below. On Sunday evening Hugh Elliott provided an interesting and entertaining presentation about his recent cruise to South America.
