A Report From Cled and Gareth Lewis on the Tiverton Weekend
13th September 2024
In: News, Members' Articles
Although there will be a full report on the Tiverton weekend in the newsletter it is appropriate that the contribution by members of the Fellowship is acknowledged formally.
That the weekend was a great success despite the weather is due to Tony and Sally’s efforts in overcoming difficulties not of their making.
A strong entry of prints and dpi’s was dealt with by Hugh in his usual “unflappable” style despite some technical problems with incompatible equipment. No one was aware of the problems as the presentations went ahead smoothly and efficiently.
The coach trip took just over 90 minutes to reach our destination in Dartmouth, where, lo and behold! - there was no rain when we arrived. Many opted to take a boat trip upriver first and then out to the mouth of the Dart, in a coal fired paddle steamer which was very enjoyable.
Some members wandered about in the town and have a light refreshments, but also to try some street photography. Others took the opportunity to walk to the castle, taking about 40 minutes each way (allowing for photo opportunities), with refreshments at the cafe near the castle.
We all re-assembled at the quayside in time for the next stage of the coach trip, to Totnes and the start of the South Devon Railway (SDR) Riverside Station. Travel from the main station to Riverside necessitated a “short” walk and a river crossing (thankfully via a bridge). During this walk, the rain, which had stayed away for most of the day, came back, lightly at first and then with greater intensity. Plenty of photo opportunities presented themselves on the station, including old railway stock, portraits, the train itself and a European Eagle Owl, which was just wandering about on the platform (he had a friend with him though).
Onto the train and in a reserved carriage, we took the ride, in worsening weather, to Buckfastleigh station, where we managed a short photo-op, a short visit to their museum and shop and a quick jog to the coach.
Overall, there were about 100 entries in the various categories of the competition (prints and digitally projected images), so we felt that a good evening was in store Finishing the competitions relatively early meant we had more time to socialise afterwards.
One interesting feature of the weekend was a gentleman who asked if we were The Leica Fellowship ,who told us that he was familiar with the M9.
We hope he might join us because he was impressed by our friendly approach which might give confidence to those considering joining us at future meetings.
Thank you all for making the weekend such an enjoyable event.
