Alan Humphries Article About Photographing People

Candids

Like most things in my life my photography has been that of a generalist including an interest in Candid shots. In another life, the fabled quiet shutter and unobtrusive M6 coupled with a 35mm lens was the ideal “candid” outfit. The combination just allowed you to become part of the crowd. However this is one genre that, that for me, has in recent years fallen by the wayside. The growing awareness and public sensitivity in recent years, to the right for personal privacy, especially in relation to the photographic exploitation of children, has led me to lose my nerve as a male photographer and it is now very rare for me to consider ‘candids’.

As I enjoyed looking for the ‘quirky’ ‘amusing’ or ‘unusual’ photographic comment on humanity it started me thinking, “Have I any reasonable ‘candids’ that I could show members via the website?” Having had a nostalgic trawl through numerous files I have come up with few, some featuring fellow Members past and present.

I hope you will enjoy them.

Photo comment By Ken Davis: Alan, thanks for this thought provoking article, I share your feelings exactly.
Photo comment By David Askham: Thank you Alan for your retrospective journey into a genre of photography which, unfortunately, has become unnecessarily controversial in recent years. But humour in the street can still be found. I think that I recognise one or two of your subjects. But you have rather disguised them ;=)
Photo comment By Cled Lewis: Hello Alan, A lovely selection of candids and a variety of situations. The M6 and 35mm Summicron was a great combination which helped to remain inconspicuous.

Photo comment By Keith Walker: A fun set but the last one is a seriously good image.
