James Jarché - NEW and EXTENDED ARTICLE

Late last year, I was invited to write a longer version of my original article (published on The Leica Fellowship website on 1st November, 2024), extolling the virtues of an ITV documentary on the life, and almost forgotten work, of a London-based British photographer called James Jarché’. But there was a problem.

There were no funds to pay for agency fees for the use of historic pictures taken by, or relevant to, Jimmy Jarché’s career. Fortunately, his grandson, Sir David Suchet, came to the rescue by allowing use of images used in his autobiographical book ‘Behind the lens’. This book was essentially about his illustrious career in the dramatic arts, and his learning about Leica photography from his grandfather, James Jarché.

Photo comment By Alan Humphries: Thank you David, forba really fascinating piece.
Photo comment By Melinda Stone: Really interesting, David, especially as a reminder of the excellent television programme we saw when it was first broadcast. Thank you.
Photo comment By Ken Davis: This helps increase the knowledge about an important documentary and press photographer who would probably have been totally forgotten were it not for his famous grandson's work in telling his story. I remember watching the tribute when it was released, a fine story is told.
Photo comment By Pam lewis: We too watched the itv production of the programme and thoroughly enjoyed it. We also recognised some of the places he photographed
Photo comment By Keith Walker: Sir David is President of 'The Leica Society' and turns up at most events. The portraits of himself were taken by Robin Sinha, who many will have met on visits to Bruton Place and Duke Street.
