The Happy Cellist by Pam Lewis

08th December 2023
You may have noticed in our Gallery a wonderful photograph of a cellist smiling happily at us. This was taken by Pam Lewis so we asked Pam for the story behind the wonderful picture:

He was one of a group of six young musicians who were rehearsing for a series of concerts in our local church. I was creeping around them all in turn (they did know I was there)and when I got to Toby and pointed the camera at him he gave me the most lovely wicked smile and I snapped him.
The concerts annually are arranged by the Tarlton’s son Ben who also plays the cello. Most of the musicians were at the Yehudi Menuhin School together before going to the Guildhall.
Ben arranges a series of Chamber Music Concerts every March which are very well attended. They usually run for three or four evenings and possibly a matinee too in case people cannot make it in the evening.

It was taken on my Panasonic GX8 with a Panasonic/Leica 50 - 200 mm MICRO 4/3rds Lens. I was fairly close to him.

Photo comment By David Askham: Pam, you have captured a genuinely warm smile, wrapped around a gently surprised musician, while he is still concentrating on his performance. The fact that it was a rehearsal permits his moment of frivolity and the glee in his eyes. Very well captured!
