David Askham - 'Colour Perception and the Photographer'
How do you perceive colours, throughout the spectrum? Most non-photographers don't know or don't care, unless colour perception has impacted their careers in some detrimental way. Yet a surprising three millions of the UK population are affected by Colour Vision Deficiency or CVD. If you do the arithmetic, we probably have five or more members with CVD issues, within the Leica Fellowship.
Member David Askham has written a thought-provoking article about this subject, based on his recent experiences with operations on his own eyes. After the lens had been replaced on his left eye, (his preference), he discovered that certain colours were not what they seemed. Read more of his article here.

‘People I Have Shot’ - James Jarché - a video - review by David Askham (2024)
01st November 2024 - 5 comments
James Jarché, a famous press photographer in his day, is not a name likely to be known by younger members of the Leica Fellowship. But for those who grew up in the 1940s, they might just remember Jarché’s work in Picture Post and other contemporary publications, fore-runners of British sunday newspapers’ colour magazines. Such weekly papers were extremely popular in the 1940s and 1950s, but relied on a regular supply of the very best of illustrative or journalistic photography. James Jarché was one of the main contributors to Picture Post and Weekly Illustrated, long before television became the medium of choice for news, as Britain became more affluent. That is the background to a fascinating documentary, with considerable photographic content and a reminder of British social history. Read more here…

David Askham - Helping Nature - the Rewards
23rd August 2024 - 4 comments
23rd August 2024 - 4 comments
Helping the natural world has seldom been more necessary than in current times. Global warming has had a catastrophic impact on some countries. Wide-scale flooding is but one aspect. Centuries-old migration routes have been disturbed with huge cosequences among the insect world and birds.
There is national concern over the sudden decline in the numbers of winged pollinators in the UK. Butterflies, bees and moths are relative rarities in our garden nowadays. So, the sudden appearance of Comma butterfly was a moment to celebrate and record. With its characteristically scalloped trailing edges to its wings, it was quite definitely a Comma butterfly.

Such an opportunity; such a challenge, dare I hope it would stay long enough for me to lay my hands on a camera?
